First off, I loved the first Pocahontas. That is, until I saw this one. Now I can never really devour it to the same level again, at least not until a few years from now when I’ve forgotten about this poor thing.

While it’s astounding that Disney attempted to plot things proper, they couldn’t have done it in any worse contrivance. I hated Rolfe from the beginning; he never develops once. That’s glorious tough considering that he’s the “romantic hero”… and radiant distinguished having a romance is an easy device to form someone. Not this guy, though, he’s about as endearing as a steel pole.

I disfavor the tea chick, which is what I’m going to call her for lack of shiny her name. The woman, to whose charge Pocahontas is placed, seems like a ancient attempt to originate me like John Rolfe: “Oh, he and this sweet if blundering passe lady have an affectionate relationship! He’s a noble guy after all! Oh Pocahontas, soon you’ll peek that!” BLECH, it was so painfully positive that she was impartial an attempt at character development that didn’t quite work. The only thing she was qualified for was actually animated what was end to laughter… although that was only twice. Wiggins in the first movie, however, puts the tea chick to shame.

I’m going to admit that I Disapprove the ending. Who the heck cares if it’s more historically factual? The point is that if you’re going to be historically erroneous, go all the contrivance! I absolutely loved the Smith/Pocahontas thing in the first movie because both were passionate, lived for worry and excitement, and had as mighty chemistry as people in engrossing movies can have. Their relationship is well-developed, as are both people as they kind of arrive to terms with each other’s culture.

John Rolfe, though? He is pompous from the beginning until the horribly forced ending. I’m not certain if it was impartial me, but it really seemed like he only liked Pocahontas after she had become “civilized.” John Smith liked her for who she was, not because she was dolled up in a painful musically-challenged sequence that made me assume of “You’ll Bring Honor to Us All” from Mulan with sheer longing. Speaking of which, I don’t understand what John Rolfe was on–she looked Horrid in that getup.

The animals also seemed to be an attempt to acquire John Rolfe more likable, because we’re supposed to consider “Hey, the animals want them together, and they want what’s best for Pocahontas so that must be what’s best for her!” Pfff, that objective made me abhor Meeko and Sail.

Actually, the whole London song made me mediate of a awful attempt to mime Bonjour from Beauty and the Beast. I really contemplate that Pocahontas would have found the city intrusive and smelly, because contemplate of the change she would have went through.

And yes, I agree that John Smith was 100% percent, unadulterated, pure Out-of-Character. I saw and agree with a previous review that stated that they seemed to want to develop him a jerk so we wouldn’t feel terrible about Pocahontas ditching who had once been “the fancy of her life.” Disney, however, seems to have forgotten that they spent an entire movie making him likable and a friendly match for their almost overly-glorified heroine. To fair throw that away almost makes me sick; why bother watching the first movie with “She’s going to eventually screw him over” hanging over your head.

Actually, I didn’t like Pocahontas either. She seemed OOC as well; certainly the Pocahontas in movie one would not have common a man who seemed to ring more of Radcliffe than anything. And that Pocahontas would not have let John Smith go. Then again, that wasn’t really John Smith and it wasn’t really Pocahontas either. I don’t know who these two were, but I certainly didn’t like them. I liked them more, though, than I liked Rolfe. Which says a lot.

Oh, they needed some cameos. Thomas, Wiggins (he would have made this movie worthwhile), etc.

I agree that Radcliffe was totally demonized. I actually had some sympathy for him in the first one, since it was made sure that he was fair trying to succeed at something and display the others at court, who hated him, tainted. Although he was villainized a lot in the first, it pales in comparison to the second. I also agree that it was crazy that James believed him. James, too, was a cartoony 2d character. Bad guy, the movie insults him more than anyone.

And yeah, I also found it exclusive that Pocahontas knew about John Smith’s death.

Basically, I’m unprejudiced saying that you should either not gaze this movie, forget about it, and/or honest expressionless pretend that it doesn’t exist. I can’t wait until I forget about this bad thing and can appreciate the first one and I customary to be able to do.

Ok, Pocahontus 2 is basically about Pocahontus “arresting on”. She goes to England to protect her tribe from an Armada. (If you abhor historically mistaken movies DON’T gaze this) She ends up falling in fancy with John Rolfe, but is reunited with John Smith. Decisions, Decisions….Well ok, i didn’t like this movie because I idea the romance between Rolfe and Pocahontus was totally botched. They hardly even talked and second, Disney in the first movie made Pocahontus and John Smith out to be soul mates and in this movie they throw away that romance like it was a fleeting thing. What about the whole “I will always be with u” thing? The animation was far worse than the originals. The songs less catchy, only a few were decent. The whole movie was sort of thrown together. If you liked the first Pocahontus movie I don’t mediate you will like the second. It totally derates the first and ruins the ending.

This is a somewhat disappointing adaptation of the astonishing book, “Flowers for Algernon”, by Daniel Keyes. This is not to say that Cliff Robertson’s performance in the title role of Charly Gordon, a gentle, mentally challenged person, is not Oscar favorable. It is, and he deservedly won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Charly Gordon. Claire Bloom is also much for her performance as Charly’s teacher and esteem interest, Alice Kinian. The jam with this film lies in the screenplay and direction of the film.

The storyline is simple enough. Charly Gordon, a gentle, mentally challenged soul with a thirst for knowledge, attends night school in an trouble to accept intellectual. His teacher is Alice Kinian, a sensitive and caring person, who recognizes Charly’s determination, as well as his limitations. She takes an interest in him and refers him to an institute that has been doing research in increasing the intelligence of laboratory mice through neurosurgery and is now on the cusp of attempting that experimental neorosurgery on humans. The institute is in the process of selecting candidates for its clinical trials.

Charly goes to the institute where he undergoes a battery of tests and has his capability for predicament solving compared to that of a laboratory mouse named Algernon, whose intelligence has been surgically enhanced. After mighty deliberation, the institute decides to buy Charly on as a human guinea pig, after Ms. Kinian eloquently persuades them that Charly’s determination and sweet disposition should overcome the fact that he is below the threshold level of intelligence that they were looking for in a human subject.

Charly undergoes the neurosurgery which initially appears to be a success. He gets radiant, very brilliant. The inevitable romance with Ms. Kinian follows, as Charly exceeds all expectations. It is here that the film begins to tumble apart and takes a swan dive. In an disaster to reveal the changes in Charly’s life, the film shows a collage of stills and scenes of Charly and Ms. Kinian that are ludicrous and almost embarrassing. They are presented in a fashion that is best described as psychedelic. It is done so poorly, as to fabricate the film lose credibility, and it is downhill from there on, as the epic becomes one dimensional. The screenplay writer and director should have stuck to the book, both in yarn and in theme, remembering that you can’t fix what ain’t broke.

Still, Cliff Robertson’s performance, as well as that of Claire Bloom, is worth watching. If you have already read the book, however, prepare to be disappointed. If you have not read the book, as yet, perceive the movie first, and then read the book.

Cliff Robertson won the Academy Award for best actor with his obliging portrayal of Charly Gordon. It takes an actor with astronomical versatility to first play a mentally-challenged man and then turn around and relate a surgically-transformed genius; Robertson fills the bill with broad satisfaction. To fully savor the quality of this film, a colossal suggestion would be to first read the short yarn titled “Flowers for Algernon” on which this movie is based.

I’ve owned these films on tape, laserdisc, and DVD, and yes, it was definitely worth shelling out the bucks to consume all 20 films again on these spectacularly remastered sets.

The earlier films display the most dissimilarity, of course. The Connery Bonds and the first three or four Moores present the most improvement. Rich, shimmering, colors, a exciting, crisp image, beautifully remastered 5.1 surround sound (the DTS tracks are utterly delicious) — I’m distinct there will be another repackaging of these movies before too long, but as far as I’m concerned, this is a conclude to an “ultimate collection” as it gets.

(I’m referring to all four sets, basically, and these comments apply to the technical aspects of the discs, rather than dealing with my opinions of each movie.)

The discs will be released individually starting in March of 2007, BUT (and it’s a gargantuan but) they will be single-disc releases without any of the special features. All of the films in these boxed sets have a second disc with extras (most of them ported over from the novel DVD releases) . So, you’ll be able to pick, say, “Dr. No” and leave “Moonraker” on the shelf, if that’s your pleasure … but you won’t come by any extras.

Hopefully the studio will rethink this before too long. Superior marketing usually means making your customers blissful.

Hi all you Bond fans!…

I don’t understand what all the expansive disappointment is with the order of the films in these sets!!! Clear, it’d be nice if everything was in chronological order, but who are we to resolve that?

The amount of hard work that went into the making of these sets, and the quality of the sets themselves, are nothing to disregard! I don’t understand how anybody could save chronological order over the quality of something itself… If you really wanted what was in these sets, then how can you argue over the order of the DVD’s in them???

To me, the makers did a improbable job of ordering them, because then the not-so-popular movies procure somewhere to live too! How would you feel if you had to release sets in an order that not so many people would seize a sure volume of, impartial because less people liked what was in it? You have to respect the makers’ wishes, and go for it.

I, myself, am profoundly involved in these sets, and to me… they are a MUST to have! I can peep how people who have already bought the previous DVD sets would be upset, but I reflect these sets explain re-buying them 100%. (Too poor these North American releases aren’t in the attache case, though!)

As another reviewer (Eric D. Zdrojewski “Lockport Eric”) said, you can sell your other DVD sets (if you wanted to), and you’d have a decent amount to go for these sets.

… and as another reviewer on here (The JuRK) said… I’m definitely getting these for Christmas this year too!!! :-D

Thanks,

Mike Sorge

Carol Strong’s film, with sincerity and without condescension, clearly grasps the somewhat ridiculous nature of the uncouth riding culture of South Central L.A. — the tricked-out cars that waft so halt to the ground they scheme sparks; the ornately airbrushed sedans that bounce so high they sometimes crack their springs.

But it also unquestionably understands and conveys the beauty of the automobiles and the people who live for them.

“Sunday Driver” breaks it all down to elements — the paint, the rims, the hydraulics, the codes, and the individual pride but also the brotherhood that exists among lowriders.

T-birds and Impalas are lovingly photographed and the stories poignantly told over a perfect soundtrack by the JB’s, the Temptations, the Miracles and more.

Perhaps most provocative aspect of the film is its scrutinize into the group’s uneasy relationship with the cops, a thread that rises to a particularly wry coda (ending, of all places, in Japan) .

There are so many car shows and even car channels that “Sunday Driver” on the surface might seem obscure or ragged, but it’s a vivid itsy-bitsy film that gets in, samples the culture and the stories, then rides off in honest under an hour.

These guys really explain the passion leisurely the lowridin culture. It shows what success can bring with hard work and dedication. I reccomend this video to all lowriders and anybody who may be alive to or bewitching. Lowridin is not unbiased a hobby, it’s a contrivance of life. Sustain your head up Gangster. You’ll be abet soon and will earn something even better than Santana. -peace

I might feel differently if I had not grown up watching these films, but I will never know. The Rankin/Bass specials were something I always looked forward to watching on television, and the Ralph Bakshi “Lord of the Rings” was one of the first films I ever saw in the theatre. I loved them then. I adore them now.

Watching them now, I contemplate that the quality mild holds up. Rankin/Bass are not masters of fluid, perfect animation. More than anything, they are stylists who achieved the highest quality they could within budget limitations. “The Hobbit” is the best of the bunch, using dialog and account from the book. The background paintings are splendid, and the whole production has a hand-crafted feel to it that is far more charming than bigger-budget animation. “Return of the King” suffers from the abominable casting choices for Merry and Pippin. The best scenes are Frodo and Sam in Mordor. The songs are memorable in both productions, and I dare you not to hum “Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom” or “Where theres a Whip, theres a Blueprint.”

Ralph Bakshi’s “Lord of the Rings” has suffered most through the passage of time. His experimental animation does not go over well with viewers feeble to “Toy Record” and “Akira.” Personally, I derive his vision of the fable to be equal parts charming and creepy. He also took dialog from the books, to large do. His Murky Riders are gross, as is his Balrog. It is sad that he was not able to complete the second half as planned.

Considering that the audience for these productions are children, and with the plan that adapting a new is difficult, I assume both the Rankin/Bass and Bakshi versions fill up well. Watching these as a child got me involved in the books, and didn’t color my enjoyment of them at all. That’s a reliable recommendation.

If for no other reason than “completing a media collection”, these 3 DVDs are worth owning by fans of LOTR that cherish the anecdote, but haven’t gone over the deep slay in terms of what they mediate “righteous” renderings of Tolkien’s work.

The Hobbit is probably the best of the three, though inexplicably is missing about a third of the sound finish work from the broadcast version - most notably Bilbo slaying the spiders, and Smaug’s blasts of fire. Unusual. Anyway, with the distinguished cast of voices it stands well on it’s contain. IMHO, Brother Theodore’s version of Gollum’s converse is probably the best there will ever be. Enormous for kids, fun for adults who remember.

Bakshi’s “Lord of the Rings” was perhaps over ambitious - some of the rotoscoped scenes drive me nuts - but some things he did very very well. The relationships between the fellowship are completely believable. The dark riders are spooky as it gets, and his version of Galadriel’s pool/test are true on the money. All in all, I tranquil like pulling it out on a shadowy pre-snowy autumn night.

Return of the King - this one’s an oddity. I agree with some other reviewers here, it’s treated like The Hobbit, but it’s so sad that it almost gets silly in places. Roddy McDowell is over-the-top gargantuan time, painting Sam distinguished harsher than the books, and mighty is glossed over for time constraints. Though,it too, has it’s moments.

Over all, the Rankin Bass offerings are resplendent to notice at…the backgrounds are breathtaking - water colors brought to life.

Buy,Download, Or Stream J.R.R. Tolkien Animated Films Set! Click Here

None of these three films are perfect, but given the fact that no major studio would touch any of ‘em, _and_ the fact that over 1200 pages of narrative are being crammed into under 4 hours of movie, I regain them mostly satisfying versions of LOTR, and secure myself watching them more than I expected to.

‘Wal Mart, The High Cost Of Outrageous Price’ is filled with first hand testimonials and some hard-fact figures that will befriend in validating your hatred of this greedy giant, and visually exposes those in other countries who are ruthlessly passe as slaves to accomplish the cheap products you take when you patronize this monolith.

These “jobs” provided to the labor forces of India, China, Bangladesh, and Mexico are not ‘good wage’ jobs even for third world standards. The people are overworked, underpaid, and forced to work in sub-human conditions. These human beings design 13 to 17 cents and hour, and work 10 to 18 hour days without breaks, all so you can have that $1.49 blouse.

Exposed in this film are the squalid, rent controlled apartments in China, provided by the company, that attach to shame the most rancid ghetto house in your hometown. And if the employee chooses not to live in these rat-infested housing developments, the rent is unruffled deducted from their wages. Wal-Mart has managed to lower the work standards plot for these hard-pressed, outrageous wage, third-world countries that other companies are going to follow, sucking down the standards of working all across the world.

The manager of the Mexico factories went on a tour to perform clear that working conditions were humane. He was fired when he reported that the conditions were intolerably inhumane. In his possess words, he didn’t judge retaliation would be brought against him for doing his job.

If you mediate it was a top-notch thing that America abolished slavery, then mediate again before you go into a Wal-Mart. Fair because the US is no longer “importing” slaves, doesn’t gain it just to continue to exercise slavery in other countries to perform high profits for personal fetch. Wal-Mart’s practices are no different than bringing slaves over from Africa to buy our cotton, it’s level-headed a cheap device for the rich to acquire richer at the expense of human blood and sweat.

Intermittently inserted in the film is a speech made by Lee Scott to the high-end employees and stockholders of Wal-Mart, which sounds very remarkable like an Amway pep-talk. Lee Scott’s earnings for 2005 were $27,207,799.00. The average Wal-Mart hourly employee’s was $13,861.00.

Interesting facts: After 9/11, the Walton’s built themselves an underground bunker in case of another terrorist attack, costing millions of dollars that should have went into paying benefit the Government for having to subsidize their employee’s un-affordable medical benefits.

The Walton family gave less than 1% of their wealth to charity. Bill Gates, not even a nice man himself, gave 58%.

The “Considerable Need” fund, station up to abet Wal-Mart employees in emergencies, received five million dollars from Wal-Mart employees (making $13,861.00 annually) and only $6,000.00 from the Walton family, who made, collectively, 102 billion.

Wal-Mart actually had a commercial campaign about “buying American” while all their products advance from sweatshops overseas.

Wal-Mart has refused to address crime statistics that point to an upswing of violent crime in their expansive, remote, under-lit and un-protected parking lots, putting their customers in grief and taxing the local law enforcement. The Region of California alone paid out 80 Million dollars in medical benefits to poverty-level Wal-Mart employees because the 102 Billion Dollar Walton family does not want to give their “associates” exquisite medical benefits.

There are many ways to detest Wal-Mart and its ilk, and many books out on the subject, but I recommend watching this DVD so you can actually scrutinize the slave workers and conditions overseas that these selfish billionaires exploit without passing down their profit to the “petite people” who helped originate their empire. The presentation could have primitive a slight more snappiness, and the DVD starts out very unimaginative, but sustain watching and you will eventually ogle the monster peeking out from tedious your curtain.

Stop shopping at Wal-Mart. Unprejudiced terminate. You don’t need their cheap goods that drop apart two days after you bring them home, and it feels helpful to know that you build a disagreement by not supporting slavery. Be Pleased!

A grand documentary that contrasts the public persona of Walmart with the human toll of their behind-the-scenes business practices. Deeply personal vignettes from dinky business owners, Walmart managers, workers, attorneys and environmentalists review the tragic consequences of one of the world’s largest, most venal corporations running amok on rural America - subsidized by our occupy tax dollars. This is a movie was Walmart does NOT want you to survey - so snarl all your friends!

Though some here and in other circles have remarked that they occupy “City Lights” is overrated and over-sentimental, I unruffled bear that one cannot yelp how lively and ravishing the film becomes as it draws toward its conclusion. “City Lights” remains my well-liked Chaplin movie with “Fresh Times” coming in at a finish second. Chaplin plays his classic Tramp character who falls for a blind flower girl and wants to benefit her come by money for an operation to cure blindness. The boxing scene in which the scrawny Chaplin takes on a seasoned prize fighter is the major funny highlight of the film featuring gags that have been imitated and recycled by countless other comedies. The finale is nothing short of touching, resplendent, and vivid and shows perfectly the paunchy emotion that can be conveyed in a soundless report. This is one of the few films that unexcited, time and time again, can bring tears to my eyes. “City Lights” is a masterpiece.

a must for any movie collection. the dvd version is desirable and provides two audio options, the new mono and a rich version re-recorded in stereo in 1989 for Chaplin’s centennial. the stereo gather adds quite a bit to the mood of the film.

of interest as well, is a brief collection of annotation/changes by Chaplin to the unique opinion of the film.

the movie itself is a sizable tribute to Chaplin’s genius. there is the incredible myth line with ample comical moments like the ‘audio’ joke in the beginning, the whirlwind dance scene, the boxing match, then it ends… well, the demolish is acted simply but precisely and is compelling in its ambiguity. absolutely one of the greatest cinematic ending of all time.

This is awesome stuff for any serious Sinatraphile. Many of the other compilations of his career have poor-quality clips, particularly from his short-lived TV reveal of the 50’s. But this six-volume DVD manages to unearth some truly rare B & W clips of Frank on TV, dating succor to gigs on the Milton Berle and Jackie Gleason shows. The quality of the snippets has somehow been cleaned up and the resulting images are quite expedient. There is also an abundance of color clips from the Chairman in the 60’s, guest hosting the Kraft Music Hall, guesting on the Dino indicate, singing duets with Perry, Bing and even some oddities like a comedy routine with Bobby Darin.

More surprisingly is some mammoth concert footage of Sinatra, remarkable of it from slow in his career. Some of it is true fan movies, taken directly from the audience, and it’s lively stuff. You can look Frank singing One for My Baby with his Jack Daniels, cigarette and the obligatory stool: classic moments! He also delivers a sparkling rendition of I’ve Got You Under My Skin. In addition to all of this little-known material, there’s an abundance of film clips, all of profitable quality. There’s even a few outtakes from Suddenly and the The Manchurian Candidate, as well as brief interviews conducted with Frank at various premieres and engagements.

The weakest fraction of this DVD are the interviews with people who worked with Frank. Some of them are racy, others are not, but I’d rather honest gaze real footage of the man himself. But there’s plenty of that to relish and you can behold this Night and Day, into the Wee Microscopic Hours of the Morning. If you admire Frank, you gotta cherish this DVD, baby! So kick abet with a glass of J.D., snuggle up with your common chick and obtain down to some serious living with this exceptional DVD.

A nice package of three discs which is an extended version of a 2 DVD area with the same title which lacks of last fragment Sinatra Memorial. One of the most famous advantages of this DVD is it has more than 5 hours running time. So the mark is very cheap for such a DVD with long playing time. The region includes 6 parts (”The Bobby Sox Years”, “The Hollywood Years”, “Hollywood: The Second Time Around”, “The Swinging Years”, “The Vintage Years” and “Sinatra Memorial”. This DVD is replete with many frail footages from his early years. Particularly, if you are looking for Sinatra’s historic movie career, this DVD will satisfy you. DVD includes some interviews with his friends and co-stars such as Sammy Davis, Jr., Shirley Jones and Juliet Prowse. It is disappointing that within these different parts, some scenes and footages are primitive couple of times. It is not noble to leer the same things over and over again. From time to time, recount and sound quality decreases due to the age and rarity of the footages old-fashioned. Unfortunately, at the fifth section, some scenes freezes very frequently. I am not distinct if this defect is on my copy only or not. However, considering its long playing time and cheap effect, it is unexcited worthwhile to add this one to your Sinatra Collection even with all these disadvantages.

On the afternoon of March 27, 1977, the world’s worst aircraft grief occurred at Los Rodeos airport on Tenerife Island in the Spanish territorial Canary Island chain. It interested 2 of the largest passenger airliners in production, a pair of Boeing 747 jumbo jets, and the horrific accident claimed 583 lives.

Beginning from a point about 4 hours preceding the tragedy here, both aircraft were originally destined for Gran Canary Island to the east of Tenerife. A bomb threat and the follow on detonation of a plan forced the closure of the airport here causing all aircraft to divert to Tenerife. With only 2 air traffic controllers on duty on Sunday and them not accustomed to handling the high influx of airplanes that were en route to their dwelling, the site worsened by the slight. Having only one runway and with ramp situation and taxiway points getting clogged, it was becoming a veritable traffic pickle at the airport.

With all inbound aircraft later parked on the ground, the air traffic controllers had to be creative in devising ways to taxi planes to the runway for departure amidst the clutter that surrounded them. During this time period, shameful cloud conceal encroached upon the airfield causing a thick fog which seriously itsy-bitsy visibility for everyone. Using an alternate but approved way called `back taxiing’, the controllers directed both 747’s to enter the runway site to stage for takeoff.

The KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight eventually reached the slay of the runway where it turned completely around and waited for clearance to leave in their recent direction. The Pan American flight was mild traveling down the runway looking for the side taxiway the controllers told them to pull into to await their turn to fade. Both planes were now nose to nose separated only by several hundred yards of dense fog and no possible method of seeing each other.

Devastating events soon unfolded with the KLM captain beginning his lift off without clearance from the tower and the Pan American crew, finally finding their exit point from the runway, began to turn off but there impartial wasn’t time to glean certain. Traveling too swiftly to close or veer, the KLM jet had to attempt a seize off and it left the ground but collided with the top of the Pan American aircraft causing massive distress to each plane.

Investigators from the United States, the Netherlands, and Spain worked hard to catch the root causes of this tragedy and they eventually reached several conclusions. Although pilot error and shameful visibility were shown to be leading factors here, additional contributing elements were also examined.

I’d like to say that aviation standards have progressed well in 30 years in learning from this catastrophe but statistics demonstrate otherwise. In closing out this program, experts recount that come misses (runway incursions) are composed far too popular nowadays. Even though technology has been created to improve safety measures in this regard, very few airports in the country actually have it in residence for exercise. Here’s hoping for a safer and more conscientious aviation environment in the arrive future.

NOVA did some really elegant work in this documentary in my view. The research done here looked very detailed and the presentation was first-rate. For those who flit, don’t soar, and everyone in-between, I recommend this program to all of you.

This episode of “Nova” is a standout for the normally very well made series. Narrated by Stacy Keach, the subject of this prove is the deadly collision on the runway of two 747’s on the Canary Island of Tenerife which killed 583 people. It is calm the deadliest aviation accident in history.

The DVD explores the intricate position of circumstances that came together to cause the accident, and while human error, especially in the KLM crew, was the sure focus of the episode, other deeper causes are analyzed. The interviews are generally well executed, although there are minor misstatements in places which do not materially detract from the points being made.

I was ecstatic that the exhibit didn’t halt at the Tenerife accident, but discussed the implications of runway incursions going forward. The NTSB and FAA have targeted runway incursions for years, and many (myself included) gain that the relative avoidance of accidents (there are exceptions, certainly) in current years is more a matter of luck than anything else. Although systems for mitigating incursions are in development, none has yet reach to elephantine fruition, and even simple things such as in-ground flashing lights signaling the entry to a runway are exclusive except at very broad airports. One gentleman interviewed place it perfectly: “We’ve been lucky too long.” He’s suitable, and this episode of Nova not only explains how it happened, but how it can happen again.

This is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in aviation safety, or safety systems in general. The computer animations, while not up to the CGI effects of a Hollywood production, are quite effective, and the reenactments are powerful more skillfully staged than in many aviation programs.

br This 1979 comedy is absolutely indispensable for fans of Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, or Andrew Bergman, who wrote the film’s screenplay and went on to direct IThe Freshman/I and IHoneymoon in Vegas/I. (Let’s forgive him for IStriptease/I.) Arkin is extraordinarily funny as a dentist who quickly grows skeptical about the wild claims of his daughter’s future father-in-law (Peter Falk) that he is a CIA agent. When he is drawn into a bizarre adventure in a banana republic, however, he takes a different view. Arthur Hiller (ILove Story/I) provides serviceable direction, but the real draw here is the perfect chemistry between the two leads and Bergman’s weirdly comic mind. Watch for the look on Arkin’s face when Falk’s character tells a story about giant tse-tse flies. I–Tom Keogh/I
